"Flowing Rhymes"is the first in Taiwan and the third in the world to feature a 3D-printed concrete landscape seat. This innovative project is part of the landscape improvement project promoted by the Water Resources Bureau of the Kaohsiung City Government after the opening of the Kaohsiung Meinong Sports Center. C.M.CHAO ARCHITECT&PLANNERS worked with ROSO COOP to build the outdoor seating and parterre. The design team used a self-developed robot arm for 3D printing of cement to demonstrate multi-directional molding. Inspired by the local water imagery of Meinong, the project creates street seating that has curves like a river flow, creating a unique piece of landscape art for the area.
Function
Cement 3D printing technology facilitates construction. For designers, it offers greater creative flexibility and the ability to take design to a higher level. For users, the technology provides a new visual and tactile experience. In the past, people were used to experiencing spaces with right angles, while curved spaces were often limited due to costs and production difficulties. Now, with cement 3D printing, our future spatial experience will become more diverse. The project is a collaboration between C.M.CHAO ARCHITECT&PLANNERS, a firm that transforms landscape into design, and ROSO COOP, a company that provides intelligent construction processes, to create an all-age friendly recreational and sports venue that is expected to attract more people to the area.
Unique Properties
Cement 3D Printing Technology in Taiwan - The world's most advanced countries in terms of development include the United States, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and China. These countries have already applied cement 3D printing technology to building construction. In contrast, Taiwan is a late starter and has yet to build a building using cement 3D printing technology. Taiwan's first robot arm 3D cement printer was co-developed in 2016 by Professors Yu-Ting Sheng and Shih-Yuan Wang at the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. After several years of optimization, it was not until 2023 that the technology was first applied to actual large-scale works. The work "Flowing Rhymes" also marks the first large-scale concrete 3D-printed street furniture in Taiwan, providing a new option for public street furniture.
